Trip to Fullerton

Last Thursday I went out for an adventure! 

Muckenthaler Cutural Center in Fullerton was opening the bojagi exhibition, "From Seam to Seam".

I was invited to the exhibition as one of 11 bojagi artists and I decided to attend a opening reception.

다녀왔습니다! 지난주 목요일 제 모험기입니다.
남가주 Fullerton에 있는 Muckenthaler Cultural Center에서 11명의 보자기작가를 초대해 "From Seam to Seam"이란 이름으로 보자기 전시회가 열렸답니다. 저 또한 초대받아 출품을 한지라 오프닝 리셉션이 있는 날 참석했지요.

Taking an airplane, renting a car and eating lunch alone, meeting people I never met before.....

But excitement was my company.
비행기를 타고, 차를 빌려서, 점심도 혼자서 사먹고 처음으로 만나는 사람들과 어울리고.....
나홀로하는 모험이지만 신나게 즐기기로 마음을 먹었지요.

 I found this nice sushi place near Cal state Fullerton and ordered spicy tuna roll and miso soup.

I love restaurants near colleges! All of these were less than $10 including Chai tea!
플러튼대학 근처에서 작지만 깨끗한 초밥집을 찾아서 매운참치롤과 미소국을 시켜서.
역시 대학근처가 좋네요. 여기에다 차이까지 해서 10불도 안되는 착한 가격!

And the next door was very cute cupcake place.

I got this 'Fleur de Sel' cupcake and 2 macarons.

The coffee flavored macaron was already disappeared.....
바로 옆엔 컵케익파는 집이 있어 '소금꽃' 컵케익과 마카롱2개를 샀지요.
커피맛 마카롱은 이미 사라진지 오래라서 사진도 못 찍고.... ㅎㅎ

After snacking these yummy treats, I went off to my real adventure!

The Muckenthaler house was built by Walter and Adella Muckenthaler in 1924 atop a hill in Fullerton. The 18-room villa on 8.5 acres was donated to the city in 1965 by Harold Muckenthaler who wished to see his childhood home used as a cultural center for the public to enjoy.

The Muck produces performances, gallery exhibits, classes and host weddings now.

They recently remodeled the house and this show was a part of grand reopening celebration!
맛난 후식까지 끝낸후엔 본격적인 모험의 길로!
Walter and Adella Muckenthaler가 1924년에 Fullerton언덕에 지은 The Muckenthaler house는  8.5 에이커의 대지에 방이 18개나 된답니다. 1965년에 아들인 Harold Muckenthaler가 자신이 유년시절을 보낸 이 집을 일반인들의 문화센터로 하기위해 시에다 기증을 했다는군요.
The Muckenthaler Cultural Center란 긴이름을 줄여부르는 The Muck은 공연, 전시, 강좌 그리고 결혼식을 치르는 공간으로 변신했구요.
지난 몇년동안 리모델링을 해서 새로이 문을 여는 걸 기념해서 첫 전시로 이 보자기 전시회를 열었다네요.

집에선 큼지막하던 내 보자기는 어찌 이리 작아보이는지......

 

Mary Kim was kindly let me borrow her purchased bojagi to show in here.

I made this boajgi for her few years ago.
메리 김여사님께서 소장하고 계신 몇년전 보자기를 빌려와야만 했어요.
지난 몇달간 집안에 일이 있어 작품을 만들 시간이 모자랐어요....

And my lily pad bojagi was nicely displayed with tea set.
연잎도 찻잔과 함께 잘 전시되어 있었고, 건너편에 있는 나비 넥타이는 각도가 나오질 않아 촬영을 포기....

This is my recent piece that I started in Korea last December. 

지난 12월에 한국에 있을때 한땀한땀 이은 '그리움' 보자기.

 

 Another excitement was finally meeting my dear friend, Jack Brokette!

He and I met through Facebook and shared our common interest(which is Bojagi) for a couple of years but never had a chance to meet in person until last Thursday.

His works are intricate but whimsical at the same time!

I wish we had more time to talk about the techniques, materials and inspirations.

또한가지 신나는 일은 내친구, 잭을 드디어 만난 일!

페이스북에서 보자기를 인연으로 만난 우린 지난 몇년간 인터넷에서만 소통을 하다가 이번 전시에 같이 초대받아 만날 수가 있었지요.

잭은 텍사스에서 저는 북가주 플레즌튼에서

기법, 재료, 작품세계등에 대해 잭과 더 얘기를 나누지 못한게 못내 아쉽지만 그래도 이렇게 만난게 어디예요!

다른 작가들은 모두 이지역에서 활동하는 분들이 오프닝에 참석하셨네요.

멀리 한국서 출품한 분도 2분 계셨고 오레건에서 활동하시는 분도 계셨어요.

보자기를 모티브로 작품을 하신 화가 선생님의 작품도 작은 방에 따로 전시가 되어 있었구요.

Other artists' works were nice, too!

I am regretting now that I didn't take all the pictures of bojagi there.....

The youngest artist was 16 years old high school sophomore. Very impressive and interesting!

I wish I have pictures of her works.
다른 작가들의 작품도 근사했고 다른 작품들 모두 다 찍어오지 않은걸 이제서 후회합니다.....
한 작가는 16세, 고등학교 10학년 아가씨. 정말 인상적이었고 작품도 훌륭했어요.

Here are more bojagi from other artists.

This was an eye opening experience for me.

I never showed bajagi with other artists and being in a group made me feel more comfortable and nervous at the same time.

I need to work harder and experiment with new ideas....

다른작가들의 작품을 보면서 앞으로 제 갈길이 멀다는 것도 느끼고 이렇게 남들과 함꼐 전시하는것도 좋은 경험이 되었답니다.
또 다른 모험이 어디서 나를 기다릴지 가슴벅찬 상상을 하며 또 작업실로 향해야지요. 휘리릭!
