다녀오겠습니다! Time to travel~

I don't know how my summer went this fast but all of sudden fall is coming in full speed. The weather is still hot but I could feel the change of the wind. In my house, all the family members are busy packing for different trips. My daughter is packing her suit case for her new college life, my husband is packing for exploring foreign country trip and I am packing for upcoming Korea Bojagi Forum 2014 trip. 

My baby will go to the school 2500 miles from home. Yes, I will be a empty nester from this fall. But as a positive thinker, I am glad that I will have more time for bojagi. 

From August 24-28, 2014, I will be in Jeju, Korea attending KBF 2014. I am excited to meet many people with same interest, BOJAGI! There will be a special exhibition that I will participate in and lots of lectures and workshops. I am also happy that my friends are going there, too. Helen and Youngmi who are taking my bojagi class will be there. Younkyu, my another student in Bay area is showing her bojagi as a participant. Lucy from Mexico City is participating in the exhibition, too! Oh, my Facebook friend, Yoko is coming from Japan and I am going to meet her. 

I will take lots of pictures to share so don't be sad if you are not going this time :)

여름이 어떻게 지났는지 모르게 시간이 흐르고 가을준비를 할 때가 왔습니다. 우리집 식구들은 제각각 다른 여행을 위해 짐을 꾸리기 시작합니다. 딸아이는 집에서 2500마일 떨어진 곳으로 대학생활을 시작하러갈 짐을 꾸리고, 남편은 처음가보는 낯선나라로의 여행을 꿈꾸면서 짐을 꾸리고 저는 제주의 상쾌한 바닷바람을 기대하며 2014 보자기포럼에 갈 차비를 합니다. 새로운 생활을 앞둔 아이를 보며 떠난후에 빈둥지를 느끼지 않게 더 바쁘게 살거라고 스스로 다짐을 합니다.

제주에서 보자기를 사랑하는 많은 사람들을 만날 기대와 친구이자 제자인 헬렌, 영미씨와 좋은 시간을 보낼 희망에 잔뜩 부풀어 있습니다. 헬렌과 연규씨 그리고 멕시코시티의 루시가 만든 보자기를 전시회에서 볼 겁니다. 이번에 같이 못가서 아쉬운 분들은 제가 올릴 사진을 기다려주세요!

Sonoma County Museum Boajgi Workshop

Last Saturday I drove 2 hours to Santa Rosa. It shouldn't take that long but the wether was nice and I don't blame people heading to the wine country :) Sonoma County Museum was in downtown Santa Rosa. Elegant building was historic post office in 1910. This museum contacted me when they were opening the exhibition, Camellia Has Fallen: Contemporary Korean Artists Reflect on the Jeju Uprising. Santa Rosa and Jeju are sister cities.

While I was planning this bojagi workshop, Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles generously supported this workshop.

지난 토요일 2시간을 달려 산타로사에 있는 소노마 카운티 뮤지엄에 다녀왔습니다.  평소보다 긴 시간을 달려야 했지만 좋은 날씨에 와인 컨트리로 향하는 행렬을 뭐라할 순 없지요 ㅎㅎ 산타로사 다운타운에 위치한 이 뮤지엄은 옛날 우체국으로 쓰인 고풍스러운 건물입니다. 지난달엔 자매도시 제주에서 온 특별전이 열리기도 했지요. 보자기 워크샵을 기획하는 동안 엘에이 한국 문화원의 지원을 받아 재료까지 공급받는 바람에 제가 더욱 신나게 일을 진행할 수 있었지요. 이자리를 빌어 감사드립니다! 

Some people has experience at hand sewing and some never done it before but everybody was so into this fun project. 

Most people came from Santa Rosa but two people came all the way from Redwood City and Turlock! Thanks to Korea Daily for newspaper article! They read about the workshop in the newspaper and drove more than 2 hours for 2 hour workshop. 

어떤이들은 손바느질이 익숙해 보였고 또 어떤이들은 처음 해보는 거라며 다들 열중했지요.

산타 로사 근방에서 온 사람들도 많았지만 한사람은 베이지역 레드우드 시티에서 또 한사람은 모데스토 근처 털록에서 장장 2시간 반을 달려 2시간 워크샵에 참석하였습니다. 중앙일보 기사 덕에 만난 귀한 인연 입니다.

I think everybody enjoyed slow hand sewing. Working with hands are the way of soothing and meditating for me and I hope everybody at the workshop felt the same feeling. After the workshop some people asked me to come back for mosi workshop and I'd love to come back and teach it.

The workshop went well and here's a finished one from one of the student!

모두들 열심히 이 느리고 느린 손바느질의 매력에 빠져 시간가는 줄 몰랐습니다. 마음이 차분해지는 이 바느질의 맛을 다들 느꼈으리라 믿어요. 워크샵이 끝나고 떠나면서 다시 돌아와 모시 바느질을 가르쳐 줄 수 있냐는 질문에 긴 운전도 2시간 내내 서있었던 것도 한순간 잊혀지며 다시 기운이 납니다. 다음날 완성했다며 제게 보내준 동효님의 보자기 입니다!

100 Thimbles in a box

My dear friend Joan Suwalsky and her friend Debbie Kent finally finished it! When they started this project I was very excited and now I am more excited to share this with you. Not only an eye candy but also shows and tells so much about Korean culture and traditional art forms. I was fortunate to participate in this book project even though my participation is very small. You can see some of my bojagi works in the book :)

보람을 느낄때~ Judy made me happy!

I got an email from Judy the other day. She took my private workshop last year. She is a experienced quilter who inspired by Asian Art Museum's bojagi collection. She searched online and found me :) She came to my house to learn how to make bojagi and we shared our common interests. 

When I finished my DVD, she bought one copy and gave me a long and detailed feed back. I do bojagi because I love to do it however these compliments are making me happy and think about responsibility of keeping this art form as my life time mission. This time, she sent me pictures of her own creation. gift wrap bojagi for her friend. She used her own choice of fabrics and design but I was smiling when I saw her Gamchimjil (whip stitch) throughout her bojagi. Contrasting colored stitches are distinctive detail of bojagi!

Judy, you made me happy and I am very proud of you! Thank you for letting me use your beautiful bojagi pictures.

주디에게서 이메일이 왔습니다. 작년에 아시안 아트 뮤지엄에서 보자기 콜렉션을 보고 가슴이 뛰는 감동을 느꼈다며 인터넷에서  검색을 하다가 제이름과 웹사이트를 찾아냈다지요. 집이 그리 멀지 않아 개인 워크샵을 하고 보자기 만들기를 배워갔답니다. 퀼트 경험이 보자기 수업을 좀더 쉽게 만들었을까요?  작년 여름에 보자기 디비디를 보고 아주 자세하고 마음이 담긴 평을 보내주기도 했답니다. 이번엔 주디의 해석이 담긴 선물보를 만들어 친구에게 선물을 했다면서 사진을 보내왔네요. 감침질을 한번 보세요. 보자기의 특징인 대담한 색상의 실을 사용했지요!

주디, 자랑스럽고 기쁜 마음으로 모두에게 자랑을 해요. 사진을 보내주고 이렇게 쓸수 있게 해줘서 고마워요!
